Under-16 Girls Surge To Victory

These are heady times for the Charlestown Sarsfields Ladies club as hot on the heels of the Under-14 girls county final victory,  the under-16 girls emulated their under-14 counterparts with a brilliant victory over Belmullet in the C final played recently at Fr O`Hara Park, Charlestown. The Sarsfields ladies surged their way to victory as they blew away the challenge of Belmullet and were comprehensive winners as they  emerged victorious on a scoreline of 8-11 to 1-4 in what was a power-packed performance from the green and white.

The Charlestown Girls took control of the game midway through the first half with goals from Leah O`Grady and two from Katie Gavin providing them with the platform to kick on and this they did in some style with further  points from Leah O`Grady and Amy Mahon leaving them firmly in control at the interval as they were in the box seat holding a 3-5 to 1-3 lead and good value for it too it must be said.                           The Sarsfields put the game to bed early in the second half as they got the scoreboard moving in one direction only with Laoise Harkin, Katie Gavin and Jessica Casey all on the mark to out further daylight between the teams. The Sarsfields backs were also doing their bit and put up an immovable barrier in front of their goal as they defended with intelligence and determination and managed to limit Belmullet to just one solitary point as they hounded and hassled their opponents into submission. The Sarsfields finished with a flurry of scores to complete a magnificent performance overall with the final whistle giving rise to great scenes of joy and exuberance as players, supporters and management celebrated another great day for the green and white with lots of happy faces and smiles permeating the air when the cup was presented to a smiling Erica O`Connor, captain of the Sarsfields victorious crew. Special mention to the management team of Kevin James Durkin, Geraldine McDonnell, Rosaleen Durcan and Sinead Halligan who did a super job with the girls all season and had them in wonderful shape with their fitness levels very evident in the manner they powered their way to victory. The girls lacked for nothing in terms of coaching and skills with all the hard work the management put in on the training park coming to fruition where it counted most between the two white lines. Another stellar day for the Charlestown Sarsfields Club as a whole and one which gives all facets of the club a real boots as silverware and the winning of the same makes all the sacrifices in terms of time and commitment all the more worthwhile, Congratulations to Amy Mahon who was awarded the player of the match on the back of a wonderful, all action display as she was at the heart of all that was good about the Sarsfields play from first whistle to last.
