Birthday Celebrations

Charlestown Sarsfields GAA Club marked our 130th anniversary yestersay. The day started off with the official unveiling of a commemorative plaque by Mr John Gallagher SC. John is a native of Church Street and the grandson of one of the attendees at the clubs very first meeting. Mr John Prenty, secretary of the Connacht Council and Mrs Mary Prenty, secretary of the East Mayo board were among the very large crowd gathered at Vincent Doherty’s house for the official unveiling.

The action then moved to Fr O’Hara Park where a full afternoon of football took place on the field. Curry GAA were fantastic in providing teams at U8 boys and girls, U10, ladies and senior men. The glorious weather lent itself to some great football and a late Jason Marren goal pipped it for the visitors. A huge thank you to Chairman Barry Gallagher and all involved with Curry GAA club. The bouncy castles, BBQ and ice cream on hand kept everyone entertained, all provided free of charge thanks to the generosity of the local business community. €1700 was collected on the day from the generous contributions of the attendees and this will be split between Cancer Care West and Breast Cancer Research.

A great many people put a lot of effort into making yesterday such a great success and we would like to thank Vincent Doherty and his family for allowing us place the plaque on his home as well as Chairwoman Rachela Clark and the Ladies GAA club for providing their team and coordinating the refreshments afterwards. The club members who had Fr O’Hara Park looking fantastic gave up most of their bank holiday weekend and Ryan O’Connor, Padraig Kilehan, Ciaran McBrien, Eamon O’Donnell and Patrick Breheny deserve special mention. Finally, we would like to thank the following local businesses for their support in donating all the food and entertainment on the day.
