Match Report

Charlestown Sarsfields eked out a good 2-8 to 1-8 victory over Westport in Division 1 D of the Welcome Inn Senior League in a close contest played at O`Hara Park recently. The Sarsfields have recorded a mixed bag of results in the league to date but this  victory pushes them into the play-off places and keeps them on the heels of the pace setters Cil Chomain. The Sarsfields had to withstand a late rally from the Port as they looked in control at the interval when they led 2-4 to 0-4. The Sarsfields goal scorers were the youthful Ryan Duffy and the evergreen Liam Breheny who has made a return to the green and white colours after an absence of some years and has brought energy, dash and any amount of enthusiasm to the panel which has been refreshing to see. That trustee left foot is still in good working order by all accounts with his goal a real thing of beauty as he slammed the ball to the net to register his first score for the Sarsfields in over a decade or more. It was a brilliant strike and proved crucial in the grand scheme of things and was the difference between the teams at the finish as Westport came hard at the Sarsfields in the final ten minutes and managed to reduce the winning margin to three points at the final whistle. The Sarsfields held firm however and this rounded off a good weekend at senior level with both teams recording crucial victories in the league to stay in contention in both. Breheny`s goal was perhaps the standout moment of the weekend however and gives further impetus to the old saying  that “Form is temporary Class is Permanent”.
