Match Report

Charlestown Sarsfields got back on the winning trail in Division 1 B of the Welcome Inn Senior League when they pulverised Ballinrobe in round 5 on a scoreline of 5-18 to 0-1 on a totally one sided encounter played at O`Hara Park recently. This was a total mismatch from the thrown in as the Sarsfields took out their frustrations of the previous two losing weekends in full on a hapless Ballinrobe side whose final scoring tally makes for abject reading from their perspective. The Sarsfields were in full flow and had the game pretty much wrapped up after ten minutes when they led 1-6 to no score with the visitors reduced to chasing shadows such was the gulf in class between the two teams on the night. The Sarsfields had 3-11 racked up at half-time with Mark Caffrey with two and Paul Mulligan bagging the Sarsfield goals. The Sarsfields were toying with their opponents as they ran through them at will and the scoreline could have been a lot worse from a visitors stance as the Sarsfields blew some further chances to add to their goals tally.

The second half witnessed more of the same as the Sarsfields continued to pour on the scores and administer further pain to a Ballinrobe side that will want to forget this performance in a hurry. The Sarsfields piled on another 2-7 on the scoreboard which only served to enhance their scoring average which might yet play a crucial role in their promotion hopes. Niall Murphy got on the goals trail with two good strikes and the biggest cheer on the night was reserved for the visitors when they finally broke their scoring duck with their solitary point attracting some ironic cheers in both camps. The Sarsfields were ruthless and focused on the night however and while the standard of opposition was to put it kindly feeble in the extreme, they took full advantage and turned it into a scoring fest and got some much needed confidence back into the squad following some near misses in both the league and championship in recent weeks. It was a fine team performance with Niall Murphy, Jack Reilly, Paul Mulligan, Mark Caffrey, Gareth O`Donnell and Colm Maye particularly outstanding on what was a surreal night with supporters struggling to recall a more embarrassing performance from an opposition side.
