Match Report

The Sarsfields got their first win on the board in division 1 of the Under-14 championship with a final group game victory over Knockmore in a good scrap played at O`Hara Park recently. Both teams have been finding the going tough in the lofty echelons of division 1 and there little for except pride and to avoid the indignity of finishing at the bottom of the table.

The Sarsfields have had a great year overall ,winning the division 2 league title in great style and more than holding their own against some top quality teams in division with Ballaghdereen and Claremorris among the favourites to annex the title proper. The Sarsfields deserved their 1-7 to 2-3 victory if for nothing else but the courage and heart they displayed in beating an equally competitive Knockmore side who brought plenty of intent and cussedness to the contest.

Both sides fought like tigers to gain the upperhand but the Sarsfields had an edge in the middle of the park all through the game and this perhaps was the decisive difference between the teams when the final whistle sounded. Knockmore however more than contributed to what was a game that was always interesting and close and while disappointed to lose out they can be proud of their overall efforts .

The Sarsfields can now switch their focus to the East Mayo Championship where they will be fancied to add another title to go with their league triumph earlier in the season. The management team of Gareth O`Donnell, Niall Murphy and Gerard McLoughlin have developed a great rapport with this squad of players and got the best out of them right from the off and will be determined to finish the season in style by having a right good cut at winning an East Mayo title.
