Our u16s began their championship yesterday evening with a solid display in poor conditions in a rain soaked Lahardane. The score line suggests that Charlestown steamrolled their opponents however the opening exchanges proved difficult for the young Sarsfields as Ardmoy McHales stormed out of the blocks and led a deservedly 0-7 to 0-1 after 10minutes.
The situation worsened in as many minutes as Charlestown midfielder and number 9 Matt Lenehen hobbled off and the tide looked firmly set against our boys. However Charlestown began to get a grip of the game with Patrick Goldrick and Paul Towey leading the charge with some fine score taking and ball carrying. Ardmoy began to struggle as Conor O’Toole took charge of midfield and Charlestown enjoyed a fruitful period going in at the break 3-6 to 0-9 ahead.
The second half began much like the end of the first as Charlestown started well as Rooskey assassin Paul Towey gave an exhibition of long range point taking combined with an exquisite piece of goal finishing by Ruairi Cullen after a wonderful one two with Paddy Ward.
The game from there on fizzled out as Charlestown battened down the hatches and done well to not concede a single goal thanks to a strong defensive effort by Cormac Bones and a good goal keeping display by Luke Dunleavy. Next up for the Sarsfields in Round 2 is Crossmolina in Fr. O’Hara Park Charlestown @12pm Sunday. All support welcome.
