Charlestown Sarsfields travelled to nearby club Kiltimagh this evening in order to contest the semi final of the Canon Henry memorial cup in a sun soaked Kiltimagh where conditions were perfect for a good game of football as Charlestown produced a clinical performance.
The game started well for Kiltimagh however as they led early going 0-2 points up in the opening 5 minutes of the game before Marty mulvaney responded with two well taken scores off either foot to leave the teams tied. Gareth O’Donnell at midfield proved a threatening menace for the home side as his abrasive running was proving too direct for the Kiltimach defence as he tied the scores at 3 points apiece.
At the other end Kiltimagh number 11 Damien Gallagher was beginning to pick up a lot of ball and began pulling the strings for Kiltimaghs front line however after an excellent run by Gareth O’Donnell through the heart of Kiltimagh’s defence he casually squared the ball for Charlestown full forward Martin Mulvaney who punched the ball into the back of the net.
Charlestown began to start moving well as Colm Maye chipped in with a fine point to leave the scores at 1-4 to 4 before Jack Reilly popped it to Gareth O’Donnell who slotted the ball over for his second score of the game as they led 1-5 to 4. Charlestown ended the half strongly with good work rate from O’Donnell and Reilly once more as a Colm Maye free made it 1-6 to 0-4. At the other end Charlestown full back Darragh Mcmeel was excellent with some great bursts out of defence whilst Maye kicked two beauties making it 1-8 to 0-5 at the break.
The second half began like the end of the first with another Colm Maye score this time a fine fisted effort making it 1-9 to 0-5.
Charlestown substitution: Cian mc cuddan replaces Liam Breheny and Diego for Gary Murphy.
Kiltimagh responded diligently with their full forward popping over a nice score to make it 1-9 to 0-6. The game however became very laboured as both teams worked hard to gain possession as Kiltimagh kicked some very poor wides. Charlestown Substitution: Shane Fleming for Thomas Holton.
The score of the game game from roaming half back David Caffery who slipped passed two defenders before selling a wonderful dummy to the third defender before slicing the ball with the outside of the right over the bar much to the crowd’s acclaim leaving the scores at 1-10 to 0-6. Jack Reilly was excellent out the field with some top class work rate as he covered every blade of grass available to him up and was rewarded when he got on the end of a wonderful pass from Niall Murphy and popped it to Mulvaney who sent his market and the Kiltimagh keeper the wrong way and rattled the ball into the top corner and ended the game as a contest leading 2-10 to 0-7.
Charlestown Substitution: James Boyle and Jason Gallagher – Brian Sheeren , Cathal Marren.
Kiltimach worked hard to get into the game and did manage two scores in quick succession making it 2-10 to 0-9 until Colm Maye riffled a peach over the bar making it 2-11 to 0-9 as Kiltimagh only managed one more square making it 2-10 to 0-10.
The game ended on a rather joyful note as Peter Dipper Vesey came on for Marty Mulvaney and quickly made an impact with a glorious score from 65 yards with the outside of his weaker foot against a stiff breeze and a glaring sun out in front of the stand after a generous pass from Jack Reilly as the crowd erupted in utter joy ending the game at FT 2-11 to 0-9 respectively as Charlestown marched on to the Canon Henry Memorial final.
