The Charlestown Sarsfields G.A.A. Club held a very successful golf classic at the lovely, leafy surroundings of Tubbercurry Golf Club on Friday and Saturday September 18th/19th respectively. Teams of four came from all parts of Mayo and indeed Connacht to take part and lend their support and the committee were absolutely delighted at the turnout with the good weather a particular bonus and making it a winner all round for the committee, golfers and spectators who joined in to make a great day for everyone associated with the event. The Committee are particularly at the very generous sponsorship they received from within and outside the community and they thank most sincerely the many and generous sponsors who came forward and supported the golf classic in a very sporting and decent manner. The weather was excellent over the two days with the dry weather making the fairways firm with the greens holding reading fast and this made for some wonderful play with little or nothing between the first four teams home on the leader board and subsequent podium. The competition went off without a hitch and again great credit must go to the committee for all their hard work and efforts which paid off handsomely with the standard of golf very much reflected in the quality of the leader board which ebbed and flowed all through before the winners were finally announced at the presentation evening held in the salubrious surroundings of Tubbercurry club house which was a hive of excitement and expectancy when Tommy Ward and his hard working committee were in a position to announce the results. The following teams were the prize winners : 1st Prize Over night stay in the Slieve Russell Hotel with golf for four Michael Durcan, Geoffrey Durcan, Kevin Giblin and Gary Maye. 2nd Prize :I Night Stay in the McWilliam Hotel, Claremorris with golf for four at Claremorris Golf Club, Ronan Forkin, Ronan Denning, Matt Kilroy and Shane McQuillan . 3rd Prize : Four Green fees at Castlebar and Ballina Golf Clubs, Michael Healy, Fr. Ladies winners who won a Meal x 4 in the Park Hotel, Kiltimagh were Breege Walsh, Breege Leonard, May Conway and Annie Scanlon.
There were also a number of other awards given out on the night and these included the following : Nearest the Pin -Paul McLoughlin, Nearest the Rope-Shaun Walsh, Furthest from the Pin -Sean Higgins, Longest Drive -Shane McQuillan. Following the presentations a great night debate and craic was had by all in attendance and the committee would like to extend their deep appreciation to committee of Tubbercurry Golf Club for making their excellent facility available for the Golf Classic, their help and support was very much appreciated with the course providing a true test of the calibre and ability of all the golfers who teed it off at the first. The banter and discussion was quite contentious by all accounts but again thanks to Tubbercurry golf club for coming up trumps and well done to the committee who ran a superb show from start to finish and covered all bases in a very thorough and diligent manner. Onwards and upwards to the Golf Classic with the barometer set very high in terms of organisation.
