Charlestown Sarsfields put some poor pre-season form behind them as they recorded a comprehensive 0-12 to 0-6 victory over Moy Davitts in round one of the Division 1 B of the County senior league played at Fr O`Hara Park, Charlestown recently.
The Sarsfields were thoroughly deserving of this victory as they bossed the game from start to finish and never allowed their opponents a sniff such was the dominance they displayed and exuded all through.
The visitors, with Brian Reape in their ranks, got off to the best possible start when the last named pointed brilliantly from play to set some alaram bells rining in the Sarsfields defence. That was as good as it got for the Moysiders however, as the Sarsfields hit seven points without reply to seize control of the exchanges with Paul Towey, Matt Lenehan, Jack Reilly, Patrick Lenehan and Patrick Goldrick whipping over some fine scores to put the Sarsfields in a real position of control.
Moy Davitts were struggling badly in their full back line as Paul Towey scorched several would be markers with his pace and lightning movement. Matt Lenehan was equally as effective in the half forward line with Jack Reilly pulling the strings at centre half forward as he hit some delicious passes in the direction of Towey which he thrived one.
The Sarsfields went into the interval in fine shape with the visitors in contrast , looking rather forlorn as they had no real shape to their play and were turning over the ball at an alarming rate.
The Sarsfields kept the pressure on in the second half as they continued to hold all the aces in every line of the field. Gareth O`Donnell and Paddy Goldrick were the masters of all they surveyed as the sprayed the ball around and with good vision and accuracy for the most part.
The Sarsfields defence were superb throughout as they curbed the threat of Brian Reape with combination of intelligent, controlled aggression as the McLoughlin brothers Gerard and Enda kept him well under wraps, ably supported by Aidan Hopkins and a vigilant and impressive David Caffrey who was, as always, steady and composed and nipped any danger that threatened the Sarsfields goal with impressive, uncomplicated defending.
Truth to tell, the Sarsfields never looked remotely in danger of coughing up their lead as Jack Reilly with a brace, Colm Maye, Conor O`Donoghue and Matt Lenehan tagged on five further points to wrap up the spoils and complete a good day at the office for team Sarsfields.
Credit to Kenny Brennan who made a terrific save from Brian Reape midway through the second half as the visitors half hinted at a revival but their effort quickly petered out with a few late frees from Reape mere consolation scores as the tempo and intensity had long gone out of the contest.
A fine start for Martin Mulvaney and his management trio with their tactics working to perfection as they looked very solid defensively and attacked with menace when they ball was moved swiftly and quickly through the lines.
Next up for the Sarsfields is a trip to Crossmolina where they take on the Deel Rovers men for what should prove another tough examination for what is in essence a young and growing team.
