The Charlestown Sarsfields 5 Km challenge hit some heights
over the course of the last week or so with the total raised standing at a
whopping €7500 which is a magnificent achievement indeed. . Money poured
into the account from all corners of the globe as people dug deep into their
pockets to support a most worthwhile and noble cause. Hats off to the
maestro Ronan Kenny who first mooted the idea on a facebook post and what
a response he garnered as young and old took up the challenge and did their
5km in all manner of innovative and fun ways. The community really rallied
behind the concept and the campaign hit the local and national media
airwaves and full marks to Ronan who gave it plenty of traction on the
Sarsfields digital media platforms which caught the attention of people of
Charlestown people in all corners of the world all of whom got involved and
tagged many of their friends and acquaintances to respond and support with
their hard earned cash. Ronan orchestrated a great campaign giving regular
updates of all monies raised which touched a chord with the public as they
flocked in huge numbers to support and most importantly donate. Ronan, with
the full backing of the club officers and executive and after many hours of
consultation and discussion settled on Pieta House and Heroes Aid as the two
charities to benefit and a good choice he made too as they are doing sterling
work in these very stressful and turbulent times for so many out there as
Covid-19 continues to inflict all kinds of physical and mental hardship on so
many in society. Both charities are doing magnificent work in the current
climate and they were only too delighted to secure the funds as charities are
operating in a vacuum at the moment with the vast majority of their
fundraising initiatives very much restricted by the lockdown and mass closure of so many businesses in the economy. The club have decided to keep the GoFund Me page open and active at the request of many with money still being donated and pledged. More updates next week but all thats left to say it we
‘ll have to get an online campaign going to get Ronan a Knighthood on the back of his brainwave which really caught fire and captured the imagination of the local and extended community as they rowed in behind him from minute one.
