Hard luck to the Charlestown under-15 team who were defeated by Davitts in the county under-15 C 2 final played at Claremorris recently.
The Sarsfields ran into a team at the very top of their form and try as they might they just couldn`t keep pace with a slick and strong Davitts side who had one of those evenings when everything they tried came off with the Sarsfields unfortunate to be on the receiving end. The team suffered a body blow before the throw-in when influential centre-forward Craig Buckley had to cry off with illness and he was sorely missed as he was a real presence in the forward line all season.
The green and white lads competed with all they had in the first half and were still in the game at half-time albeit they trailed by five with the South Mayo side holding a 1-6 to 0-4 lead.
The second half was a different story however as Davitts moved through the gears and hit two early goals which filled their boots with confidence as they took the game away from the Sarsfields in devastating fashion.
The goals knocked the stuffing out of the young Sarsfields lads as the opposition attacked in waves and kept the scoreboard ticking over at regular intervals.
The Sarsfields lads never lacked anything in effort or industry and plugged on gamely till the end but they met a much superior team who saved their best performance of the season for the final . It was a disappointing night for the young Sarsfields lads and the management team who entered the game with such high hopes. They had put together a six match winning sequence and tuned the formbook upside down in defeating Eastern Gaels in the semi-final who had beaten Davitts in an earlier group game. Davitts however, turned on the style and showed real class in getting the job done.
The Sarsfields lads will have many more days to look forward to in the years ahead and this was in no way a reflection of their ability as they had one of those days when everything fell right for the opposition with luck and the run of the ball eluding the green and white in all aspects of the game. The team and panel which took to the field on the day was as follows : Ryan Maye (capt) , Conor Drudy, Christian McEntire, Oran Horkan, Kyle Moran, Tadhg Horkan, Oisin Maloney, Evan Gavaghan , Lewis O`Connor, Shane O`Toole, Eoin Murphy, Paddy Joe Dunleavy, Cian Towey, Cillian Hanley-Marren, Dean O`Toole, Adam Shryane, Senan Farrell, Kacy Mannion, Shane Maye, Michael McCarthy, Matthew Murphy, Matthew Horkan, Mikey Giblin, Jason Jordan.
Well done to the management team of Shane Moran Gareth O`Donnell, Patrick Walsh, Joseph McBrien and Philip Craig who worked wonders with the talent and panel available to them and left no stone unturned in their preparation of the team which was spot on in every way.
