Clinical 2nd half display brings Charlestown the title

Charlestown Ladies won their second county final in a row against St. Brigid’s last Saturday evening. The first half proved a tight affair with both teams going in 2-6 a piece after some great play from both teams.

St. Brigid’s, however, did have a strong wind at their back for the first half so would have hoped to have had a lead to defend come half-time. Charlestown’s tenacious first half display meant that this lead never materialized and made Charlestown slight favourites as the whistle went to start the second half.

‘Clinical’ is the word that comes to mind when dissecting Charlestown’s second half display. As they have done many times this season Charlestown exploded out of the blocks scoring several goals and points to race into an eight point lead early into the half. Charlestown’s appreciation that this period just after half time (the Aussies call it the Premiership Quarter)  is the key time when a game can be won or lost has been a feature of their championship run.

St. Brigid’s never gave up and tried valiantly to bridge the gap all throughout the half. Charlestown however were always able to get the scores to keep a comfortable cushion between the teams. Charlestown’s defender’s defended brilliantly and their attacker’s took nearly every opportunity afforded to them. It is a great sign going forward to see pretty much every line of the team performing at such a high level.

In what has been a period of unprecedented success for our Ladies, they will hope to go one better than last year (Provincial Finalists) and bring home the Connacht title. Firstly, however, they will need to defeat the champions of Galway in the semi final (Match Details Here)
