No Stopping Determined ‘Town
Charlestown Sarsfields Ladies continued their unbeaten run in Mayo’s top league with a hard fought win over Hollymount late Saturday evening. Both teams were evenly matched throughout and Charlestown had to battle until the very last minute to secure their 3rd victory of the campaign.
Only 2 or 3 points separated the teams throughout the entire game. Once Charlestown inched their noses in front near the end of the first half they refused to give up the lead from that point on.
This was a game won in the main part by the defence of Charlestown, in particular their young full back line. Considering the young age of the back three, all of them playing in their first season at senior level, it was an awesomely assured, brave and confidence-building display from all three, with Elisha Duffy in particular proving resolute in her play. She showed great anticipation in cutting out many promising Hollymount attacks and was ably assisted by the equally impressive duo of Heather Johnson and Anna McHale by her side.
Further up the field Rachael Ruane and Kellee Crean ran at the heart of the Hollymount defence at every opportunity, with their speed, power and quick thinking providing many of Charlestown’s scores.
The pressure on the Charlestown goal slowly increased in the second half as Hollymount desperately searched for an equaliser. Charlestown showed real maturity in never panicking. They defended calmly and with purpose, controlled possession where possible and were economical in attack, always finding a score when needed to keep their noses in front until the final whistle blew.
