Another solid performance. A serious defensive shift from the Ladies today, playing against a strong breeze blowing in from the coast in the second half they held Kilmoremoy to 0-4 points, which in the end was the winning of the game.
3 Things We Learned:
1) The meanest defence in the league. Charlestown have now only conceded 41 points in 5 games, thats an average of 8 points conceded per game. No one else in the league is even coming close to those figures. This is in spite of the fact that that they have had several changes to their back 6 in almost every game. It shows the number of solid defenders they have on the bench at any one time and also how well the attackers are coming back to offer support.
2) Comfortable playing different styles when needed. In the first half with the wind at their backs Charlestown played a direct style, getting the ball from defence to attack at a rapid pace, accurately kick passing into the full forward line. In the second half against a strong breeze they kept the ball in hand for longer, went backwards if needed and hand passed their way patiently up the field.
3) Not turning pressure into points. The team’s Achilles’ heel at the moment seems to be their inability to put teams away when they are there for the taking. Last week against MacHale Rovers, they totally dominated proceedings, however going into the last quarter Rovers were still within touching distance. Again this week, with 14 wides, they almost paid for their wayward shooting. 50% conversion rate this week, 55% percent last week, they will want to be hitting the 60/65% mark to start putting the scores on the scoreboard that their good play deserves.
Player Of The Match: Elisha Duffy
Has been a rock at the centre of the Charlestown full back line all year. Today in particular she stood out, cutting out attack after attack. Her anticipation, strength and speed makes for a lethal combination and you would pity anyone that has the misfortune of marking her this year with the form she is in.
