There would have undoubtedly been some trepidation in the Charlestown ranks leading up to this game having not played Senior football for 7 years. Adding to this, they then had to go to the home of last year’s Senior Champions, Burrishoole for their first game back. The sense of relief was palpable in those opening 20 minutes or so when it became clear that Charlestown were more than ready for the demands of Senior football in 2023.
With both teams playing cautiously throughout with sweepers deployed at either end of the field, it was little wonder that defences dominated the narrative. Every one of the 14 points scored was achieved under the most extreme of pressure, with both team’s ability to score from long range being their saving grace, enabling them to beat the respective blankets around the D. The game was super physical with no quarter asked or given, the referee letting things flow whenever possible. Charlestown will be pleased with their ability to mix it in this regard, again going back to the idea of not knowing fully what to expect at this level, their conditioning both physically, and fitness wise, proved a match for Burrishoole.
In the end, both teams will be happy with the point while at the same time a little disappointed with their, at times, inaccurate and laboured attacking play. Next up for Charlestown this coming Sunday is Westport (Sept 24th 11am, in Fr. O’Hara Park Charlestown) who struggled to a win over the group’s other team Kilmovee at the weekend. There are plenty more twists and turns left to come in this group you would suspect.
